Line calls and refereeing yourselves

Without an umpire, each pair calls the balls on its own side, quickly and honestly. When you are not sure, the ball is good, and when the four of you cannot agree, replay the point.

Disagreeing about the score

The FIP rules explain how the score is called but say nothing about four players who disagree on it. In a friendly game, the fair fix is to go back to the last score all four of you agree on.

Spectators, friends and advice from the side

Under FIP rules only an accredited coach may give advice during a match, in team and double-pair events and only during rest times. Spectators have no part in calls, and anything that comes onto the court from outside means the point is replayed.

What to agree before a friendly match

The FIP rules offer real choices: advantage, star point or golden point, sets to six or to four, and a tie-break or super tie-break in place of a third set. Settle them, and whether outside play is allowed, before the first serve.

Sending the balls back to the server

Between points, send the balls back gently, never hard or at a player. Hitting the ball violently, out of the court or at the opponents when it is not in play counts as ball abuse.

Foot faults when there is no umpire

The foot-fault rules are the same in a friendly game: keep off the service line and the centre line extension, with a foot on the ground as you hit. The rules do not say who calls them without an umpire, so agree it before you play.
