Conduct and the penalty scale

Swearing, ball or racket abuse and unsporting behaviour are punished on a three-step scale: a warning, then the loss of a point, then disqualification. Very serious aggression means instant disqualification.

What counts

Audible or visible obscenities; hitting or throwing the ball violently, out of the court or at players when it is not in play; throwing the racket or hitting the court, net, walls or umpire's chair with it; verbal or physical abuse of anyone; not trying your best; and any other unsporting conduct.

The scale

A first offence earns a warning. A second earns a warning and the loss of a point. A third means disqualification. Offences by both players of a pair add up, and so do offences committed on their coach's instructions.

Straight to disqualification

For very serious physical or verbal aggression, the referee can disqualify a player or coach at once. A disqualified player loses the match and leaves the competition.

Kit, punctuality and the court

Wear proper sports clothing and shoes; swimwear is not allowed. Be on time for your match, and do not leave the court and its surroundings without the umpire's permission, warm-up included.

Identity and the final

In official competitions players must show proof of identity, nationality and age when the referee asks. Finalists are expected at the prize-giving unless injury, illness or another good reason keeps them away.
