Every padel club in the world wants to know your level, and almost every one measures it slightly differently. Most use a scale from one to seven, sometimes with decimals, sometimes with letters. The numbers drift between countries, and a 3.5 in Stockholm can look like a 3 in Seville. This guide gives you a practical way to describe your game anywhere.

The common one-to-seven scale

The broad bands below hold reasonably well across Europe, and they are what we use on this platform.

Level 1 to 1.5: first steps. You can rally gently from the baseline but have not yet learnt to use the walls. Most people spend weeks rather than months here.
Level 2 to 2.5: improving social player. You can return the ball off the back glass when it comes straight, serve consistently and volley at the net. Lobs mostly go long or short.
Level 3 to 3.5: confident club player. You can play a bandeja with intention, come off the side and back glass, and hold a rally with structure. You understand when to go to the net and when to defend.
Level 4 to 4.5: strong club player. You have a reliable víbora or a varied overhead, consistent chiquitas and good positional discipline with your partner. You win more points with placement than power.
Level 5 to 5.5: advanced competition. Regional tournaments, double-wall defence under pressure, tactical variation and a smash you can finish por tres.
Level 6 to 7: elite. National ranking players, coaches and professionals.

Why your number changes abroad

Spain and Argentina have deeper player pools, so the median club player is stronger. A player who sits comfortably at 3.5 at home may find themselves playing in the 3.0 bracket at a busy club near Málaga. In the Gulf, Sweden and the United Kingdom, where the sport is newer, levels can run a little generous.

The fix is simple: describe your shots, not your number. A message such as "I play at about 3.0 at home, solid from the back glass, still working on my bandeja" lets a club manager place you accurately.

Self-assessment, honestly

Ask yourself five questions:

Can I return a ball that bounces and hits the back glass at waist height, nine times out of ten?
Can I deliberately play a defensive lob that lands within a metre of the back glass?
Do I have an overhead that is not a flat smash?
Can I keep a volley low rather than pushing it back to the opponents at the net?
Do I know where my partner should be when I am at the net?

Five confident yeses and you are a 3 or above. Three or fewer and you are likely in the 2 band. That is a perfectly good place to be, and the most fun level for social Americanos.

Ratings that move with you

Many booking systems now calculate a dynamic rating from your match results. These are useful because they travel with you, but they take ten to fifteen matches to settle. If you are new to an app, expect some lopsided games in your first week. Play a few open matches in your own range before you join higher ones, and the algorithm will find your level faster than any brochure could.

The goal is a game where you win roughly half the points. Rate yourself with that in mind and the matches you find abroad will be the best of your year.
