Most padel rules can be summed up in one line: the ball must bounce on the floor before it touches any wall on the receiving side. That covers the glass, which is where most rallies are decided. But a padel court is more than glass. There is wire mesh, metal frames, doors, the net and its posts, and indoors there is a ceiling with lights and beams. These parts produce the strangest bounces and the longest debates. Here is how the rules most federations follow treat them, with the usual reminder that competitions can publish their own local rules.

The net, the cable and the posts

The net runs across the full width of the court and is held by a cable and two posts at the sides. In open play, a ball that clips the top of the net and continues into the opponents' court is good. Play on. A ball that hits the net and falls back on your own side is your point lost.

The posts are where rule sets differ most. Under many regulations, a ball that strikes a net post counts as if it had hit the ground on that side of the net. A shot that clips the post on your opponents' side therefore behaves like a bounce there and the rally continues, while a ball that hits the post on your own side is your point lost. Check which version your league or tournament uses. Older or non-standard courts sometimes have posts that stand outside the line of the walls, and in that case the club's local rule is the one to follow.

The mesh and the metal frame

In open play, the mesh behaves like the glass: after the bounce on the floor it is part of the wall and the ball remains in play. Before the bounce, it is out. The same applies to the metal posts and frames that hold the glass panels. A ball that strikes a frame after the bounce may fly off at a wild angle, but it is still live.

The difference is practical rather than legal. Glass returns the ball predictably. Mesh absorbs pace and drops the ball short. Give yourself room when you see a ball heading for the fence.

When the ball sticks

Occasionally a ball wedges itself into the mesh, or comes to rest on top of a wall or on a ledge of the frame. When this happens after a legal bounce in the opponents' court, the point is awarded to the player who hit it, because the opponents had no possible way to play it. If it lodges in the fence on your side without bouncing first, it is simply out.

Doors and openings

Court doors are part of the wall when they are closed. On courts with open side gaps, a ball that bounces correctly and then leaves through an opening can be chased and returned from outside, if the competition allows it. If outside play is not permitted, the point goes to the player who hit the shot. A door that swings open during a rally is a clear case for a let.

Ceilings, lights and beams

Indoors, anything above the court is out of bounds. If your shot touches the ceiling, a light fitting, a beam or a hanging banner, you lose the point, whether or not it then falls into the opponents' court. Low-roofed clubs sometimes agree a softer local rule, such as replaying the point when a lob clips a specific beam, but that has to be agreed before the match, not argued about after the shot.

Settling it on court

In social games, the simplest approach is to talk through the unusual features of a court before the first serve. Ask the regulars about any odd beams, posts or gaps. Agree how you will treat them. Then, if something strange happens and nobody saw it clearly, replay the point. Five seconds of agreement before the match saves ten minutes of discussion during it.
