Shape up for a firm volley, then play it soft so the ball dies short.
When to play it
When the opponents back off expecting a firm volley.
How to play it
Show a firm preparation. Loosen the grip and cushion the ball at contact. Aim just over the net.
Common mistakes
Floating it high. Using it when an opponent is close to the net.

Is the fake volley legal in padel?
Legal: the fake is only movement, and the shot is judged like any other under Rule 14. You must still strike the ball once, in one movement (Rules 13i and 14h).
