Fake smash
Shaping for a full smash so the defenders run back to their glass, then playing a soft drop shot just over the net.
When to play it
When the defenders retreat deep every time you prepare to smash. On a short lob close to the net.
How to play it
Prepare exactly as for a smash. At the last moment, slow the racket and drop the ball short. Aim close to the net and the side glass.
Common mistakes
Giving it away with a different preparation. Using it so often that they stop retreating.

Legal: the fake is only movement, and the shot is judged like any other under Rule 14. You must still strike the ball once, in one movement (Rules 13i and 14h).
