Behind-the-back backhand

A backhand side ball played with the racket swung behind your back, used when the ball is too close to your body or has slipped just behind you.

When to play it

When a ball on your backhand side jams you and there is no time to step away. When a ball off the side glass ends up behind your hip.

How to play it

Let the ball come level with your hip or just behind it. Swing the racket short and controlled behind your back, wrist firm. Aim high over the middle of the net for safety.

Common mistakes

Using it when you had time to make room for a normal backhand. Swinging hard, which sends the ball into your own glass or mesh. Losing sight of the ball as you turn.

Questions

Is the behind-the-back backhand legal in padel?

Legal: Rule 14 does not limit how the stroke is made, as long as it is one hit and the ball goes over the net into the opponents' court.
