Open matches are one of the great gifts of padel. You join a game listed by local players, pay your share of the court and spend an hour or so playing with people you have never met. For a travelling player, it is the quickest route into a club's life. It also comes with an unwritten code, and visitors who follow it are invited back. Here is that code, written down.

Before you join

Read the level range honestly. If the match is listed for a level band, make sure you sit comfortably inside it, not at the very top or bottom. Joining a game you are too strong for spoils it as surely as joining one you are too weak for.

Send a short message if you are unsure. One line to the organiser, describing your game in plain terms, is always welcome. Something like "solid from the back glass, still learning the víbora" says far more than a number.

Commit or do not join. Withdrawing at short notice leaves three people looking for a fourth. If your plans are uncertain, wait until they are not.

Arriving

Be early. Ten minutes before the start gives you time to find the court, change your shoes and introduce yourself. Arriving as the court is changing over is tolerated. Arriving after the warm-up has started is not.

Bring balls. Unless the organiser has said otherwise, a new tube is a generous gesture. In many clubs the convention is that the visitor or the newest member brings them.

Pay your share promptly. If payment is not handled in the app, settle up before you play, not after.

On court

Keep the warm-up cooperative. Hit to people, not past them. Five minutes of steady rallying and a few volleys and overheads each is normal. It is not the time to test your smash.

Agree the format. Ask whether the group plays golden point or advantage, and how many sets you have time for. Locals will have a usual way of doing things. Follow it.

Call your own lines and walls fairly. In padel you call the ball on your side. If you are unsure, give the point to the opponents or offer to replay it. Never call a close ball against the other team when you could not see it clearly.

Communicate with your partner. A quick "mine" or "yours" on balls down the middle avoids collisions. A word of encouragement after a lost point is better than a sigh.

Do not coach. Unless someone asks, keep technical advice to yourself, however well meant. The same applies to your partner's positioning.

Language and noise

You may be the only person on court who does not speak the local language. Learn the numbers, "sorry", "good shot" and "thank you". The other three will usually switch to English for your benefit. Keep celebrations modest and frustration silent, especially if you are a guest.

Finishing well

Respect the clock. When the booking ends, leave the court promptly, even in the middle of a set. The next group has paid for their time. Collect the balls and any bottles before you go.

Shake hands at the net. Thank your partner and your opponents. If the club has a bar or café, staying for a drink is often the moment when invitations to next week's game appear.

Rate fairly. If the app asks you to confirm the result or rate the level of the match, be honest and generous.

Follow these simple habits and you will find that most padel clubs are delighted to welcome a visitor. The game was built for four, and four strangers become a group very quickly.
