Most of the anxiety about flying with padel kit comes from tennis. A tennis racket is 68 to 70 centimetres long and genuinely awkward in a cabin. A padel racket tops out at 45.5 centimetres, the maximum length the rules allow, which means it fits inside almost every standard cabin bag on the market. That single fact solves most problems before you reach the airport.

Cabin or hold?

Take it in the cabin whenever you can. Checked bags get thrown, stacked and squeezed, and a carbon face that survives a hard smash can still crack under the edge of a suitcase. Rackets are not on the prohibited list of any major security regime we know of, because a padel racket is treated as sporting equipment rather than a blunt instrument, though individual security officers retain the final word. In fifteen years of travelling with them we have been questioned twice and stopped never.

The trap is the size allowance rather than the security line. Many low-cost carriers now give you a free "personal item" of roughly 40 by 30 by 20 centimetres and charge for anything larger. A racket simply will not fit that box. If you are flying with hand luggage only, pay for the larger cabin allowance (usually around 55 by 40 by 20 centimetres) and slide the racket flat against the back panel. Check the exact numbers on the booking page the day you buy the ticket, because they change more often than airlines admit.

If you are travelling with two or three rackets, a dedicated racket bag almost always counts as your cabin bag, not as an extra. Pack clothes around the rackets and you have a perfectly respectable week's luggage.

When you have to check it

Sometimes you have no choice: a full flight, a gate agent with a tape measure, a racket bag that is genuinely oversized. In that case, give it the best possible chance.

Use a thermal compartment as a crumple zone. The silver-lined pocket in most racket bags is designed for heat, but it also adds a layer between the face and the outside world.
Pad the frame, not the face. A rolled towel along the top of the frame absorbs impacts better than a jumper laid over the face.
Remove the overgrip if it is new. Pressure in the hold will not hurt it, but a squashed, sweaty grip after a hot transfer is miserable to play with.
Photograph everything. A quick picture of each racket before you check in makes a damage claim far easier.

Some airlines classify racket bags as sports equipment with a flat fee; others simply count them as a normal checked bag by weight. A padel bag with three rackets rarely exceeds eight kilos, so the standard allowance is often cheaper than the sports tariff. Do the sum before you tick the box.

Balls, grips and the small print

Balls are the part that catches people out. Pressurised tubes are allowed in the cabin and the hold on every carrier we have flown, but the pressure difference at altitude can pop a sealed tube's lid. That is harmless, merely messy. Buy balls at your destination if you can; they are cheaper in Spain and Portugal than almost anywhere in northern Europe, and the local pressure suits the local air.

Spare overgrips, wristbands and dampeners pose no issue. Liquid grip enhancers and spray-on anti-slip products should obey the usual 100 millilitre rule if they travel in the cabin.

The calm traveller's checklist

Measure your cabin bag with the racket inside before you leave home.
Book the larger cabin allowance if you are hand luggage only.
Carry rackets in the cabin, face inward, never at the top of the bag.
If checked, pad the frame and photograph the kit.
Buy balls on arrival.

Do this and the only thing you will be thinking about on the descent into Faro or Málaga is who you are playing at six o'clock.
