Cape Town's padel scene has grown remarkably quickly, and it is easy to see why. The city is sporty and outdoors by nature, the summers are long and dry, and very few places on earth offer this kind of backdrop for a game. Playing an early match with Table Mountain filling the sky behind the glass is a memory that stays with you.

Where to stay

Gardens and Oranjezicht sit on the lower slopes of the mountain, walkable to cafés and close to the city centre. Gardens Padel Club has six outdoor courts directly beneath the mountain, with a terrace café and a sporty, friendly crowd.
Sea Point and the Atlantic Seaboard give you the promenade, sunsets over the ocean and a short drive to most clubs.
Constantia, in the southern suburbs, is green and leafy, surrounded by old wine estates. Constantia Vines Padel has four outdoor and two covered courts on the edge of a wine estate, with a restaurant and tastings after play.

Cape Town International Airport is around twenty five minutes from the centre in normal traffic. A hire car gives you the most freedom, particularly for the peninsula and the winelands, and ride-hailing apps cover the city well. After dark, use a car rather than walking between neighbourhoods.

The wind, and how to play with it

The famous summer south-easter, often called the Cape Doctor, can blow hard on some afternoons, sometimes for days at a time. It clears the air and cools the city, but it plays havoc with lobs on outdoor courts.

The solution is simple: play early. Mornings are usually calm, bright and cool, and the light on the mountain is at its best. On windy afternoons, keep lobs lower and flatter, aim through the middle and be patient with your overheads. If the wind is really up, a covered court in Constantia is a good fallback.

Level and coaching

The local level ranges widely, from new converts who came from tennis or squash to strong club players. Open matches through booking apps are the easiest way in, and South Africans are generous with invitations to make up a four.

Thabo Nkosi coaches at Gardens and specialises in fitness, movement and competitive play. His sessions are demanding and good fun, ideal for the first morning of a trip. Court bookings typically cost around 500 rand, which feels very fair to most visitors from Europe.

When to go

The best months are October to April. Summer days in December, January and February are warm, often in the high twenties Celsius, and dry. October, November, March and April are a little milder and often less windy, which makes them the sweet spot for padel. Winter, from June to August, is cooler, greener and wetter, with mild temperatures but more rain.

The rest of the Cape

Hike Lion's Head for sunrise, or take the cable car up Table Mountain on a clear day.
Walk the Sea Point promenade in the evening, then eat by the water.
Drive the peninsula road to Kalk Bay for fish and chips by the harbour, then on to the penguins at Boulders Beach.
Spend a slow day in Constantia or further out in the winelands, and swap the racket for a long lunch.

The short version

Travel between October and April, stay in Gardens or on the Atlantic Seaboard, and play before the wind gets up. Book a coaching session on day one, keep a covered court in mind for the blowy afternoons and leave space for at least one winelands lunch. Cape Town is one of the most beautiful places in the world to play padel, and the prices make it easy to stay a little longer.
