Taking too long: time violations

Go over the time limits without good reason and the first offence is a warning. After that a serving pair lose a first serve or a receiving pair lose a point, and later offences cost further points.

The limits

20 seconds between points, 90 seconds at a change of ends, 120 seconds between sets, and no rest after the first game of a set. The clock runs from the end of one point to the serve that starts the next.

No recovering, no advice

Play is continuous. A match is never stopped or slowed down so that a player can get their breath back or take advice.

The penalty scale

The first violation earns a warning. On the second, a serving pair lose their first serve and a receiving pair lose a point. Each later violation costs another point, as the referee decides, and serious or deliberate delay can bring further penalties, up to disqualification.
