ネットに触れる、二度打ち、ボールが越える前に打つなど、ポイントを失うさまざまなケース。

Touching the net, the posts or the other side

If you, your racket or anything you wear touches the net, a post, the cable or the other pair's court while the ball is in play, your pair loses the point. Jumping over the net loses it too.

Hitting the ball before it crosses the net

You must wait until the ball has crossed to your side before you hit it. Reaching over to volley a ball still on their side loses the point.

Double hits and both partners playing the ball

Each pair gets one hit per shot, by one player. Hitting the ball twice, carrying it, or both partners touching it loses the point.

The ball hitting a player

If their shot hits you or anything you wear before it bounces, you lose the point, wherever you stand. If your own shot comes back and touches you or your partner, you lose it too.

Thrown, dropped or lost rackets

The racket must be in your hand when it meets the ball. Throwing it at the ball, dropping it or breaking the wrist cord during a point loses that point.

Your cap or a ball from your pocket lands on their side

If anything you are wearing or carrying touches the other pair's court while the ball is in play, your pair loses the point. If it only falls on your own side, play goes on unless it puts an opponent off.

Can your racket go over the net after the shot?

The FIP rules ban hitting the ball before it has crossed to your side, and touching the net or the other pair's court. They have no separate rule against a follow-through that passes over the net, so long as you hit the ball on your side and touch nothing.

Touching the net once the point is over

Touching the net only loses the point while the ball is in play. Once the point has been decided, for example by a second bounce or a ball leaving a court without outside play, you can run into the net without penalty.

Hitting the ball off the frame

A ball that comes off the frame or the edge of the racket is a normal shot. The rules care that you hit it once, in one movement, and that it then lands in their court, not which part of the racket made contact.

The ball hits your hand on the racket

Under the FIP wording, a shot from the other pair that hits any part of you or your kit other than the racket loses you the point. The hand holding the racket is part of you, not the racket.
