Once your bandeja is reliable, the next overhead to learn is the víbora. The name means "viper", and the shot bites like one. It is played from a similar position to the bandeja but with more speed, more sidespin and a more aggressive intention. A well-hit víbora bounces, strikes the side glass and stays so low that the defender is left digging it out of the corner.

Bandeja or víbora?

The difference is intention and contact point.

The bandeja keeps the net. It is a controlled, deep, defensive overhead with slice.
The víbora puts pressure on the defence. It is struck faster, with more sidespin, and aimed to come off the side glass awkwardly.

Use a bandeja when the lob has pushed you back and you are slightly out of position. Use a víbora when the lob is a little short, you are balanced and you want to force a weak reply.

The technique

Preparation. As with the bandeja, turn sideways early. Take the racket up and back with your elbow high, but let the racket head drop slightly further behind you to create a longer swing.

Contact point. The víbora is struck further to the side of your body than the bandeja, around shoulder height and slightly behind the line of your head. This lateral contact point is what allows the strong sidespin.

The swing. Swing faster and more across the ball than for a bandeja, with the racket face slightly open. Think of the racket brushing the outside of the ball from back to front and from high to low. The wrist plays more of a role here, with a natural pronation through contact, but it should be the last link in the chain, not the source of the power.

The finish. The racket finishes lower and further across your body than on a bandeja, often near your opposite hip. Then recover to the net quickly.

Where to aim

The classic víbora target is the side glass on the opponents' side, roughly level with their service line or slightly behind it. The ball bounces on the floor, strikes the side glass and then slides low along it. Defenders hate it because they cannot let it come off the back glass comfortably and they cannot attack it.

Cross-court víboras to the side glass are the most common. A víbora hit down the line into the opponent's backhand corner is a strong variation, especially against left-side players who prefer to hit forehands.

Common mistakes

Hitting it too hard. Pace without spin produces a ball that comes off the back glass at a perfect height for the defender. Spin first, speed second.

Contact too far in front. That gives you a flat smash, not a víbora. Let the ball come slightly to your side.

Neglecting the footwork. The víbora needs a stable base. If you are falling backwards, play a bandeja instead.

Using it too often. The víbora is a pressure shot, not your only overhead. Mix it with bandejas and occasional smashes to keep the defenders guessing.

Drills to build it

Shadow swings. Stand sideways at the net and practise twenty slow-motion víboras without a ball, focusing on the lateral contact point and the finish towards your opposite hip.

Feed and target. A partner feeds medium lobs from the back. Place a towel a metre from the side glass on the service line. Aim for a ball that lands just before the towel and strikes the glass. Count how many of twenty reach the target zone.

Alternate overheads. On a coached session, ask for a sequence of lobs and decide on each one whether to play a bandeja or a víbora. The decision is as important as the stroke.

Learning the víbora takes patience. It is one of the more technically demanding shots in padel, and most players need several months of practice before it becomes reliable. When it clicks, though, you will find your opponents' defensive replies getting shorter and your volleys getting easier.
