Every club player knows the feeling. The opponent's lob sails over your head, you turn and run, and by the time the ball comes off the back glass you can only scoop it back as a weak lob. The rally is lost, just more slowly. The bajada offers a different answer. Instead of defending, you let the ball rebound off the glass and attack it as it falls.

What the bajada is

The name comes from the Spanish for "coming down", and the full phrase is bajada de pared, the descent from the wall. It is an overhead played after the ball has bounced on your side and rebounded high off the back glass. Instead of letting it drop to waist height, you strike it at or above head height, with a smash or bandeja style action, while it is still coming down.

It is an attacking shot played from a defensive position, and that is what makes it so valuable.

When to use it

The bajada works when the ball comes off the back glass high and with enough room between you and the wall. Typical situations:

A deep lob that bounces close to the back glass and rebounds high.
A hard smash from the opponents that comes off the back wall with height.
A high, fast ball that you cannot volley but that will clearly rebound towards the middle of the court.

If the ball comes off the wall low or close to the glass, do not force it. Play a normal shot off the wall instead.

The technique

1. Read the bounce. As soon as you see that the ball will bounce near the back glass and rise, start turning. The earlier you read it, the more time you have.

2. Turn and move back with the ball. Turn sideways, with your non-hitting shoulder towards the net, and follow the ball back towards the glass. Keep your racket up and your free arm pointing at the ball.

3. Wait for the rebound. This is the hardest part. Let the ball come off the glass and start to drop. Position yourself so that it will fall slightly in front of you, roughly where you would hit a bandeja.

4. Strike as it comes down. Hit the ball at or just above head height, with a continental grip. For control, use a bandeja style slice to send it deep. For attack, hit flatter and with more speed towards the opponents' feet or the side glass.

5. Advance. After the shot, move forward. A good bajada should let your team recover the net.

Common mistakes

Waiting too far from the glass. If you stand in the middle of the court, the ball drops before it reaches you. Follow it back.

Hitting too early. The ball should be coming down, not still rising off the wall. Patience gives you a cleaner contact.

Trying to win the point outright. The bajada is a way to regain the attack, not a guaranteed winner. A deep, controlled shot is usually better than an all-out smash.

Forgetting to recover. Many players hit a good bajada and stay at the back. Move forward and take the net.

A drill to learn it

Stand two metres from the back glass with a partner at the net. Your partner feeds high balls that bounce near the back wall. Let each ball come off the glass, then hit a controlled bandeja style shot cross court. Start with slow feeds and gradually increase the speed and height.

Once you are comfortable, add movement. Start from the service line, turn and follow the ball back, then strike. Finish each repetition by moving forward to the net.

Why it matters

Learning the bajada changes how you feel about the lob. Instead of a threat, a deep lob that rebounds high becomes an opportunity. It takes patience and practice, but once it clicks, you will find yourself winning back the net from positions that used to feel hopeless.
