The toss: serve, receive or choose an end
A coin toss starts the match. The winners choose to serve, to receive or which end to start from, and the other pair takes the choice that is left.
The toss
Before the warm-up ends, a coin is tossed. The pair that wins chooses one of three things: to serve first, to receive first, or which end to start from. They can also ask the other pair to choose first.
What the other pair gets
If the winners choose to serve or receive, the other pair picks the end. If the winners pick the end, the other pair decides who serves first.
Who serves and receives
Once that is settled, each pair decides which of its two players serves first, and which receives first, and tells the umpire if there is one. In a social game a spun racket works as well as a coin.
