Shovel shot
An informal name for a pushing, lifting action on a ball right on the floor, often in a corner, when there is no room to swing.
When to play it
When the ball dies low in a corner or against the glass. When you are too close to the ball for a normal stroke.
How to play it
Get the racket edge down near the floor, face open. Push up and forward with the legs and arm together. Aim high and central, since this ball has little pace.
Common mistakes
Scraping the racket on the floor or glass, which can damage it and spoil the hit. Pushing the ball flat into the net.
