Dead volley
An informal name for a volley cushioned so softly that the ball barely bounces after landing just over the net. It is the same idea as the stop volley.
When to play it
When both opponents are behind the service line. On a fast ball you can cushion, which takes away nearly all its pace.
How to play it
Relax your grip just before contact. Let the racket give backwards as the ball arrives, with the face slightly open. Aim just over the net and away from both opponents.
Common mistakes
Playing it when an opponent is close to the net. A stiff wrist, so the ball bounces up and sits there.
