Every November, a steady stream of players from the UK, Scandinavia, Germany and the Netherlands arrives in Tenerife with racket bags and pale arms. They come for the same reason: this is one of very few places in Europe where you can play outdoors in a T-shirt in January without relying on luck. Winter highs in the south average around twenty-one degrees, rain is scarce, and the clubs are set up for exactly this kind of visitor.

South or north

Tenerife has two characters, and your choice of base shapes the whole trip.

The south, around Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas, is dry, sunny and built for holidays. Adeje Sun Pádel Club has ten courts, a pool bar and daily social sessions for every level, so a solo traveller can be playing on the first afternoon. Costa Adeje has smart hotels and beach clubs, La Caleta has fish restaurants on the rocks, and Los Gigantes, further up the west coast, is quieter, with dramatic cliffs.

The north is greener, cooler and more Canarian. Teide View Pádel sits on the plateau of La Laguna, a university city with a lovely old centre, and on a clear day the summit of El Teide appears beyond the back glass. Expect more cloud, the odd shower and a local crowd that includes plenty of students.

Many visitors stay south and make one trip north for a change of scene. The motorway between the two takes about an hour.

Getting a game

The south is easy. Clubs are used to visitors arriving for a week, social sessions run daily and level-matched mixing is the norm. Yeray Afonso at Adeje Sun runs winter-sun camps and is good on tactics for beginners and improvers. In La Laguna, Callum Reid is a Scottish coach who specialises in turning tennis habits into proper padel instincts, a common need among winter visitors.

Training in the sun

Tenerife's sun is strong all year, even when the air feels cool. A week of two sessions a day can dehydrate you faster than you expect, especially in the first few days after a northern winter. Drink before you feel thirsty, put high-factor sun cream on the back of the neck and the forearms, and wear a cap on outdoor courts around midday.

Plan the week rather than filling every slot. A pattern of morning sessions, a rest afternoon and an evening social game every second day keeps your legs fresh to the end. One complete rest day is wise, and the island offers a superb one.

The rest day

Take the road up into the Teide National Park, where pine forest gives way to lava fields and a moonscape at more than two thousand metres. The cable car lifts you higher still when the weather allows. Back on the coast, eat papas arrugadas with red and green mojo, grilled cherne and a glass of the island's volcanic white wine.

Best months and getting there

November to April is high season for northern European players, with October and May also excellent and quieter. Summer is warm rather than scorching thanks to the trade winds, with highs in the high twenties, but the sun is fierce, so play early and late. Tenerife South Airport is around twenty minutes from Costa Adeje by car or taxi, which means a morning flight can become an afternoon session.

The short version

Stay in Costa Adeje, play the daily socials, book a few coached hours and keep one day free for Teide. Court bookings average around €26, and the weather is the real bargain. When friends at home ask how the winter went, you can show them your tan lines.
