A professional padel event is really two events. The first half of the week is busy, spread out and open. The second half concentrates everything onto one court in front of a full stadium. Travelling fans often only know about the second. If you are planning a trip, it is worth understanding both before you buy tickets.

The early days

Qualifying and the first rounds of the main draw usually run across several courts at once. Matches start in the morning and continue into the evening. Crowds are smaller, and in many venues you can move between courts during the day, sitting close enough to the glass to hear players talk and feel the ball hit the wall.

The level is high everywhere. Players fighting through qualifying are among the best in the world and many have just as complete a game as the names on the poster. What changes is the setting: fewer cameras, more space and a feeling closer to a very good club tournament.

Finals weekend

By the semi-finals, everything happens on the centre court. The stadium is full, the music is loud between points and the atmosphere is the reason many people travel. Seats are more expensive and allocated, so where you sit matters more. The view from high up is excellent for tactics but takes you away from the sound and speed of the game.

You will also see fewer matches. A finals day may include two or three, with long gaps in between. Plan your meals and your own playing around that schedule.

How they compare

Price: early days are usually cheaper per match watched.
Proximity: early rounds often let you sit right by the glass; finals put you further back.
Variety: more matches, more pairs and more styles in the first half of the week.
Atmosphere: finals weekend is louder, busier and more of an occasion.
Your own padel: midweek visitors find it easier to book courts at local clubs.

On the Tuesday we sat a metre from the glass and watched four matches in a row. On the Sunday we watched one from the top row. Both were worth it, but I learned far more on the Tuesday.

A split plan

If your trip allows it, the best compromise is to arrive for the middle of the week, watch one or two full days of early rounds, then decide on finals tickets once you know the city. In hot destinations such as Doha, where events tend to run in the cooler months and the evening sessions are the most comfortable, spend the daytime playing or resting and take your seat as the sun goes down.

Whichever days you choose, arrive early for each session. Gates often open well before the first match, and the walk from the entrance to your seat can take longer than expected in a temporary venue. Bring water, a hat and something warm for evening sessions, when temperatures drop quickly once the sun has gone.

If you only have a weekend, accept that you are buying an atmosphere rather than an education, and enjoy it. Finals in a full stadium are a fine thing to experience at least once, and you will come home with a clear picture of how loud a padel crowd can be.
