A few years ago London had a handful of padel courts. Now you can book a dawn game inside a Victorian railway arch, a lunchtime session beside a canal and an evening match at a leafy members' club, all in the same city. The scene is young, hungry and spreading fast, with a strong intermediate crowd and plenty of Spanish and Italian players setting the tempo. Most importantly for visitors, the majority of new courts are covered, so the weather rarely wins.

East, south and west

London's padel geography follows its personality.

East London leads the way. Canal Yard Padel in Hackney Wick has six courts under a timber canopy on the edge of the Lee Navigation, with a coffee bar run by a local roastery and painted warehouses all around. Its weeknight socials are lively and level-matched, which makes it the best place in the city for a solo traveller to start.

South of the river, the railway arches of Battersea and Vauxhall have become glass-walled courts. Battersea Arches Padel has knocked three Victorian arches into one atmospheric venue near Battersea Park and the power station. The courts are compact but immaculate, and the bar pours local pale ales after league nights.

West London leans towards members-style clubs. Richmond Vale Padel Club near Sheen Gate has nine courts, a clubhouse restaurant and a garden terrace, and visitors can book off-peak slots and join the Saturday morning coached drills.

Booking, levels and coaching

London books early. Weekend Americanos are often full by midweek, and evening slots at popular venues go days ahead, so plan before you travel. Off-peak daytime courts are much easier to find and noticeably cheaper.

Tom Ashworth at Canal Yard is the coach for social players ready to get competitive, with sessions built around tactics and defence. Priya Raman at Battersea Arches works with juniors, women's squads and patient beginners, which makes her a good call for families or anyone still getting to know the walls.

Seasons and light

May to September is the sweet spot, especially for open-air courts, with long evenings that let you play until nearly ten in midsummer. Summer highs are around twenty-three degrees, which is close to ideal padel weather. London does see rain on a great many days through the year, but covered courts mean a wet forecast rarely cancels anything. Winter, with highs around eight degrees, has its own appeal: crisp mornings, quieter courts and a hot coffee waiting afterwards.

Where to stay

Shoreditch and Hackney put you close to the eastern clubs, with small hotels and some of the best casual dining in Europe. Broadway Market on a Saturday morning is the perfect stop after an early match. Battersea Power Station has become a proper neighbourhood with riverside restaurants and design hotels, ideal for the southern clubs. Richmond suits a slower weekend, with towpath walks along the Thames and old pubs.

The cost question

London is one of the most expensive places in Europe to play, with court bookings averaging around £72. Split between four players, and with off-peak rates lower still, it compares reasonably with any other evening out in the city. Budget for it and book off-peak where you can.

Getting in and around

Heathrow is linked to central London by the Elizabeth line and the Piccadilly line. Once in town, the Overground and the Tube reach almost every club, and carrying a racket bag on public transport is entirely normal.

The short version

Come between May and September, stay east, start with a weeknight social at Canal Yard and book weekend Americanos before you travel. Budget for the prices, make the most of the covered courts and enjoy a city that has fallen for padel at speed.
