Belgium was one of the first northern European countries to fall properly for padel, and Brussels shows the benefits of that head start. The city has a deep, organised and genuinely competitive scene, with leagues that run through the year and plenty of players who have been at it for a long time. Pair that with excellent food, art nouveau streets and easy rail links, and it makes a very satisfying weekend.

Getting in

Brussels Airport at Zaventem is around twenty minutes by train from the city centre. From London, the Eurostar arrives at Brussels-Midi in around two hours, and from Paris, Amsterdam and Cologne the high-speed trains are just as quick. You will not need a car: the metro, trams and buses cover the city, and many players cycle.

Where to stay and play

Ixelles is lively, green and full of cafés, with the ponds and the Flagey area at its heart. Ixelles Padel Club squeezes four indoor courts into a former printing works behind an art nouveau facade, and its bilingual weeknight leagues welcome visitors.
Saint-Gilles, next door, is home to some of the city's finest art nouveau houses and a very good choice for a base.
The canal district, around Avenue du Port, has a more industrial feel. Entrepôt Padel Bruxelles has ten courts inside a vast customs warehouse, and this is where many of the capital's strongest players train through the grey months.

The level, and what to expect on court

Belgian club padel is competitive and well drilled. Players tend to be patient, solid in defence and good at reading the walls, and the league culture means doubles partnerships are often long established. A visiting 3.5 may find themselves one step behind the local equivalent, so register modestly and enjoy the challenge.

Matches are played in both French and Dutch, often switching between the two, and English is widely understood. Scoring and etiquette follow the standard international rules, and golden point is common in social and league play, so agree on it before you start.

Thibault Lemaire, a Belgian-ranked player who coaches at Ixelles, specialises in tactics and competitive doubles. An hour with him is the best preparation for a league night or a local tournament.

Court bookings typically cost around 48 euros, and open matches through booking apps are the easiest way to find a game.

When to go

Almost all of the city's padel is indoors, so you can play here in any month. For the city itself, May, June and September are the most pleasant, with mild days, long evenings and terrace weather. December is another good choice, when Christmas markets fill the centre and a warm hall and a cold beer feel especially welcome. Winters are grey and damp, with temperatures around 6°C.

After the match

Walk through the Grand-Place early in the morning or late at night, when it is quiet.
Visit the Horta Museum in Saint-Gilles to see art nouveau at its finest.
Eat frites from a proper friterie, moules in autumn and waffles whenever you like.
Try Belgian beer with care: many are strong, and a lambic or an abbey ale is best enjoyed after your last match of the day.

A day trip by train to Ghent, Bruges or Antwerp is easy, and each is under an hour away.

The short version

Arrive by train if you can, stay in Ixelles or Saint-Gilles and book a session with a local coach before you play the leagues. Expect strong, patient opponents and enjoy them. Come in late spring, early autumn or December, play indoors whatever the weather and finish every evening with frites and a carefully chosen beer. Brussels takes its padel seriously and its pleasures even more so.
