Remate
The Spanish word for the smash, and the umbrella name for any overhead hit to finish the point. Players add a word for the type, such as remate plano for a flat smash or remate liftado for a kick smash.
When to play it
On a short lob that you can hit from close to the net. When the defenders are out of position and a firm overhead can end the point.
How to play it
Turn side on and move under the ball early, pointing at it with your free hand. Strike it high and in front of you with a throwing action. Choose the type before you swing: flat into the floor, kick for a high rebound, or out over the side.
Common mistakes
Smashing deep lobs that call for a bandeja. A flat smash that comes off the back glass at a comfortable height for the defender.
