Golden point
At 40-all, one deciding point settles the game. The receiving pair choose whether it is served to the player on the right or on the left, and they may not swap places for it. In a mixed match the player who receives is the same sex as the server. Most social games and many club competitions use it.
Golden point or star point
Since 2026 the pro tour plays the star point instead: two advantages first, and one deciding point only at the third deuce. Clubs and social events still use the golden point widely.
Choosing a format
All three ways of scoring deuce are in the official rules. Agree which one you are playing before the first serve, especially in social games.
