The rulo is one of the less well-known overheads in padel, and one of the most effective at intermediate and advanced level. Where the bandeja uses slice to keep the ball low and the víbora uses sidespin to keep it skidding, the rulo does the opposite. It uses topspin to make the ball jump high and fast off the ground and the back glass.

What the rulo does

The word comes from the Spanish for "roll", a description of the forward spin on the ball. A rulo is struck with an upward and forward brushing action, producing heavy topspin. When it lands, the ball kicks up and accelerates towards the back glass, then rebounds high.

Its purpose is to push the opponents back, force an awkward defence and, at higher levels, send the ball high enough off the back glass to leave the court or end the rally. For most club players, its value is simpler: it gives you a reliable attacking overhead that is safer than a flat smash.

When to use it

The rulo works best on lobs that are slightly short and not too high, where you have time to set up but are not close enough for a winning smash. It is particularly useful against defenders who stand close to the back glass, because the high kick makes the ball difficult to handle.

Avoid it on very deep lobs or when you are under pressure. In those situations, a bandeja is safer.

The technique

1. Prepare as for a smash. Turn sideways, raise the racket behind your head and point your free arm at the ball.

2. Let the ball drop slightly. Make contact a little lower than for a flat smash, around the top of your head and slightly in front.

3. Brush up the back of the ball. Use a continental or slightly eastern grip. Swing up and forward, with the racket face moving from below the ball to above it. The feeling is of rolling the ball over the strings.

4. Use your wrist and forearm. Pronation and a relaxed wrist add the spin. Do not try to hit the ball hard; the spin does the work.

5. Aim deep and through the middle. A rulo should land in the last third of the court, ideally between the opponents or towards the weaker defender.

6. Recover the net. As with every overhead, move forward immediately after the shot.

Common mistakes

Hitting flat. Without the brushing action, the ball has no kick and becomes an ordinary overhead that the opponents can easily return.

Too much power. Swinging hard reduces the spin and makes the shot inconsistent. Control the speed and let the topspin lift the ball.

Contact too far behind the head. The ball should be in front of you. If it is behind your head, play a bandeja.

Aiming too short. A rulo that lands in the middle of the court gives the opponents time to attack.

A drill to build it

Start at the net with a partner feeding medium lobs. Hit ten rulos at half speed, focusing only on the brushing action. Watch how the ball kicks off the ground. Once you see a consistent high bounce, add targets: a towel placed a metre from the back glass, first in the middle, then near each corner.

Then play points where the net team may only use bandejas and rulos on lobs. You will quickly learn which situations suit each shot.

How it fits your game

Think of your overheads as a toolbox. The bandeja keeps the ball low and buys time. The víbora attacks the side glass with spin. The rulo pushes the defenders back with height. The flat smash finishes the point. Players who can choose between them depending on the lob become very hard to defend against, and the rulo is often the missing piece for club players who have only learned the first and the last.
