In padel the pair matters more than the player. Two average players who move well together will beat two good players who move independently. Most of that teamwork happens at the net, where the team that controls the space usually controls the point. The principle is simple: imagine you and your partner are linked by a piece of string about three metres long.

The basic net position

When your team is at the net, both players should stand roughly two to three metres from the net, a little behind the service line in the middle of their half. This position lets you volley balls that come low and fast while still being able to step back for a lob.

Too close and you are vulnerable to the lob. Too far back and you are volleying from your feet.

Moving with the ball

The key idea is that your team moves as a unit towards the side of the court where the ball is.

When the ball goes to the opponent on your side, you move slightly forward and towards the side wall to cover the line. Your partner moves towards the middle to cover the cross-court angle and the gap between you.
When the ball goes to the opponent on your partner's side, you move towards the middle and slightly back, while your partner moves forward and towards their wall.

Think of the string: when one player moves, the other follows. The gap between you should never become large enough for the ball to pass through the middle.

Who takes the middle?

The middle is the most common source of confusion. Two simple rules:

The player with the forehand in the middle takes it. For two right-handed players, that is usually the player on the left side.
The cross-court player takes it. If the ball is coming from a cross-court angle, the player diagonally opposite the hitter is usually better placed.

Agree on this before the match, and call the ball early with a simple "mine" or "yours".

Dealing with the lob

When the opponents lob, the net team must decide quickly. The player whose side the lob is on should take it if possible, with a bandeja, víbora or smash. If the lob is too good, both players should retreat together to the back and defend, rather than one player staying at the net while the other chases the ball.

A useful rule: if one player goes back, both go back. If one player goes forward, both go forward. Split positions, with one up and one back, leave a huge gap diagonally across the court.

Communication

Good pairs talk constantly but briefly. Use short calls: "mine", "yours", "back", "switch", "up". Agree on the meanings before the match. After each point, a quick word about what worked helps more than a long discussion at the changeover.

A drill for pairs

Play a two against one drill. One player at the back feeds balls to different parts of the court. The net pair must volley each ball back while maintaining their string distance. Every few balls, the feeder lobs, and the pair must retreat together. Swap roles every five minutes.

Then play points where the net pair loses the point if they are ever more than four metres apart when the opponent hits the ball. It sounds artificial, but it builds the habit quickly.

Moving as one is not glamorous. It does not produce highlight-reel winners. It does produce pairs who are very hard to beat, and it is the fastest way to improve as a team.
