Dublin's padel scene has grown fast, and it has done so in a very Irish way: through existing tennis and rugby clubs, community halls and groups of friends who discovered the game and refused to stop playing. The courts are mostly covered or indoors, which suits the weather, and the social side is every bit as strong as you would hope. For a short break, it is hard to find a warmer welcome.

Getting there and around

Dublin Airport is around half an hour from the city centre by bus or taxi, with flights from across Europe and North America. The Luas tram and the DART coastal railway make it easy to get around without a car, and the city centre is compact enough to walk.

Where to stay and play

Donnybrook and Ballsbridge are leafy, elegant and close to the centre. Donnybrook Padel Club has four covered courts at a long-established tennis and rugby club, with a busy bar and a strong social scene.
The Georgian quarter, around Merrion Square and Fitzwilliam Square, puts you within walking distance of the museums, the restaurants and St Stephen's Green.
Sandyford, on the Luas green line, is more modern. Sandyford Padel Hall has six indoor courts, a café and a gym, with lunchtime leagues and play all year round.

Finding a game, and the culture around it

Dublin's padel crowd is sociable, enthusiastic and very welcoming to visitors. Many players came from tennis, squash or other racket sports, and the level ranges widely. Open matches through booking apps are the easiest way in, but simply asking at a club desk often works just as well.

The real draw is what happens after the game. A match at a Dublin club usually finishes in the bar, and a visiting four can expect conversation, local recommendations and quite possibly an invitation to play again tomorrow.

When to go

May to September is the most pleasant time to visit, with mild days around 19°C, long evenings and the best chance of dry weather. Rain is common in every season, though, so the covered and indoor courts are a real asset. Winters are mild but grey, around 6°C, and still perfectly fine for indoor padel and a cosy pub afterwards.

Off the court

Walk the cliff path at Howth, on the north side of Dublin Bay, then eat fish by the harbour.
Take the DART south to Sandycove for a sea swim at the Forty Foot, or on to Dalkey for coffee and a walk on the hill.
Spend a morning in Phoenix Park, one of the largest city parks in Europe, where deer graze freely.
Explore the Georgian squares and the museums around Merrion Square.
End the day in a traditional pub with live music.

A Dublin weekend tends to involve more late evenings than planned, so leave the earliest court bookings for the first morning, not the last.
