Rule 4: choosing sides and service

A coin toss decides ends and service. The winners choose to serve or receive, choose an end, or ask the other pair to choose first, and then both pairs tell the umpire who serves and receives first.

Punkt 1: A coin toss

The choice of ends, and of who serves and receives first, is decided by tossing a coin.

Punkt 2: Option: serve or receive

The pair that wins the toss may choose to serve or receive first.

Punkt 3: Then the others pick the end

If the toss winners choose to serve or receive, the other pair chooses the end.

Punkt 4: Option: choose the end

The pair that wins the toss may choose the end for the first game instead. If one end has the sun or wind behind it, this can be the smarter pick.

Punkt 5: Then the others pick service

If the toss winners choose the end, the other pair chooses whether to serve or receive first.

Punkt 6: Option: let them choose

The pair that wins the toss may ask the opponents to choose first.

Punkt 7: Tell the umpire

Once the serving order and ends are settled, both pairs tell the umpire who will serve first and who will receive first.
